Sorry for the Lapses. News for Jan 31

A mosque almost got bombed in Detroit, Americans are stranded in Egypt, and the horror film ‘The Rite’ won the weekend’s box office. It’s good to be back and making you informed.

Man arrested outside largest mosque in America with a van full of explosives. Roger Stockham was arrested outside the mosque in Dearborn, Michigan with a load of illegal explosives. It appears he has a history of anti-government antics, but he has never tried something like this before. Dearborn is the center of the Detroit area’s Arab population, and Detroit’s is one of the biggest in the country. This does not belong in America.

It’s a scary time to be an American in Egypt. There is quite a bit of unrest in the country, and there are thousands of American travelers without internet or other communication forms. May have taken refuge in the airport in Cairo. Charter flights are going to begin ferrying travelers out of the destabilizing country.

Horror film ‘The Rite’ wins weekend box office. Warner Brothers earned about $15 million off of the film’s first weekend in theaters. The majority of viewers were over 25. ‘True Grit’ brought its total up to $138 million. Looks like the Dude is doing pretty good.

News of the Day

Mexican parents of a boy shot on the border are suing the United States, a German tanker full of sulfuric acid capsized on a river and Apple’s CEO takes a health leave. Thats the news of the day.

Parents of a Mexican boy- who was throwing rocks across the border at Border Patrol Agents and was then shot and killed- have decided to sue the United States. Sergio Hernandez Guereca, 15, was shot after apparently pelting the agents from the Mexican side of the border. The FBI had accused him of being an immigrant smuggler. There have been demonstrations in Juarez showing protest of the shooting. His parents claim the agents had no right to shoot him and the shooting was completely unjust. It’s the wild west out there….

Tanker carrying sulfuric acid capsized on the German part of the River Rhine. The vessel is believed to be intact, but there is still about 2,400 metric tons of the acid on the ship. Two crewmen are missing. The river, a major transportation artery for the area, has been closed. Watch the video.

Steve Jobs takes medical leave. The CEO of tech giants Apple has been granted a second medical leave in two years by the board of directors of Apple. He expects to still be involved in major strategic decisions, but the position of CEO will be filled by Tim Cook. Read the full story.

News Today

Today an astronaut could not stay off the pavement, we have your answer about your zodiac and gas prices could rise to the highs seen a couple years ago.

Iran agrees with Venezuela and Libya that $100 per barrel crude oil prices are acceptable. United States price per barrel rose to more than $91 per barrel. A 27 month high. Anyone remember gas prices 27 months ago. Well, they were considerably higher than they currently are. The only force that could drive prices lower is an increase of supply from Iran’s fellow Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). Currently allies in the organization Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates have been outspoken about keeping prices lower. If no other news interests you, you may want to pay attention to this.

Astronaut scheduled for spacewalk may have plans foiled by a bicycle accident. It is unknown exactly what happened, but Tim Kopra was in a bike crash but will be okay. It is unclear whether or not he will be able to participate in the mission.

Did your Zodiac change? Who cares? You might, so watch this.

Tunisians stick it to the man and overthrow their government, Representative Giffords is thankfully breathing on her own and a fugitive who lived for 30 years without being caught, was finally arrested. It’s just another day in this crazy world.

Tunisians overthrows iron-fisted government. Tunisians overthrew their president which has ruled for a very long time. There is now sentiment across the middle east that it could happen in more than one of the Arabic countries ruled by monarchs and dictatorships. It’s a whole different world than the United States.

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords can now breathe on her own. The intended target of the shootings in Tuscon had her breathing tube removed. She is still in critical condition after the shooting that took six lives in Arizona. Authorities have arrested a man, Jared Loughner, in connection with the shootings. Although she is still in critical condition, this is good news.

Man evades police for 30 years after escaping from jail. Ian Jackson Macdonald was arrested in Florida, but apparently he owned an appliance store in West Virginia while living in Pennsylvania (they border each other). While in Federal Prison he faked a heart attack and escaped from the hospital. He and his wife proceeded to change their names and move to Pennsylvania. He was being held to be extradited to Canada on charges of smuggling Marijuana. Wild story.

Today’s News

There is turmoil in Tunisia. The  president Ben Ali has just fled the country with his family to safety in Saudi Arabia after constant rallies and civil unrest have given him reason to fear for his life.  The prime minister Mohammed Ghannouchi has taken over the position as interim president amidst the economic crisis.  Meanwhile corruption, unemployment, food shortages, and riots have ravaged the country.

The NFL draft is quickly approaching and the two stars of the championship winning team Auburn Cam Newton and Nick Fairly have entered.  Earlier this week the Heisman winning Newton and Fairly showed strongly in the national title.  Other key prospects include Clemson’s Da’Quan Bowers, Georgia’s A.J.Green, and Alabama’s Marcell Dareus.

Tension is eased as Obama recently eased travel restrictions between the U.S. and the Cuba. Religious groups and academic groups will be able to sponser travel groups to the formerly locked up country.  The new policy should increase our interaction with the people and hopefully plant ideas of freedom from the Cuban govornment.  More American “promotion of freedom” is just what our foreign policy needs…..

News of the Day

Tom Brady is an asshole, an Australian boy sacrificed his life for his younger brother and its looks like many more people will be losing their homes in the financial depression. Not as good as yesterday, but when is it ever?

Tom Brady is an asshole. True? Maybe. May or may not be totally newsworthy other than the fact that there is nothing like watching the circus thats been going on before the rivalry playoff game between the Pats and the Jets. In the latest development, Jets player Anthony Cromartie called Patriots quarterback an “assohole.” Sports just aren’t fun with sportsmanship…

Young Australian boy drowns after asking rescuers to save his little brother. This sacrifice is amazing, its a moving story coming out of the flooding in Australia. The boy, Jordan Rice, insisted rescuers save his younger brother and by the time the rescuers got back to him, it was too late.

Over 1 million Americas predicted to lose homes. Its looking bleak for many Americans as many of the big dogs in the market have stated around 1.2 million homeowners will lose their homes.

News Stories. Important things to Know

It snowed in almost every state, the Wikileaks founder could be heading to “the chair” in the future, and Sarah Palin is at the center of the latest feud between the left and right. Its been an interesting day.

Florida only state not to have snow present. This has little importance in contrast to the pressing issues, but if you are keen on sounding somewhat tuned into the world around you, this could be a good conversation starter. New England got an absolute pounding, Hartford, CT got 22.5 inches. More:

Palin taking heat from left for rhetoric in aftermath of the Tuscon shootings. It’s hard to say if there is a real answer to the current bickering between the left and right. One thing is for sure, both sides have taken more opportunity to argue than come together and show some bipartisan unity. It’s a sad, sad time when anyone has the nerve to launch any campaigns but one of sympathy. More:

Wikileaks’ Assange could face the death penalty. Who knows what to think about Assange? Bad or Good? He is currently facing extradition to Sweden, from England, which could potentially extradition to the United States, where the death penalty may be on the table. He is in London and today had a brief court time, before his real extradition hearing. More:
